One of the oldest forms of
arts and crafts Carvings is probably the oldest form of the
arts and crafts. A carving, which involves shaping wood into
various articles or objects, has been practiced for many years.
Well-seasoned wood is used in carving. Dying and fallen trees
are generally preferred. The wood is available in the form
of logs, which are collected either from Forest Corporation
or timber brokers, taken to a trolley saw mill and cut into
manageable dimension by a trolley saw. These are reduced to
a plank size by handsaw. The planks are seasoned for few days
so that wood is amenable to carving. The planks are reduced
to then desire sizes before further use.
There are various techniques for producing the desired wooden
products. Various kind of carving done manually by using carving
chisels by the artisans. Inlay work is also known by the name
of Tarkashi where wire / pieces of iron or brass are hammered
into the desired engraved lines.
Shisham is the most preferred wood for making carved product.
Teakwood, Walnut and Rosewood are also used as per the requirement
of the customers. For low relief work Shisham and Deodar and
Ebony for incised designs are used. Rohila, Sal, Babul etc
are used for bold work. Other most commonly used wood is Mango,
Tun, Neem, Sal, Jamun and Rohira. |
